Changing Focus

We gotta make a change, it's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes. Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live, and let's change the way we treat each other. You see the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do what we gotta do, to survive. Tupac Shakur

If any of you are still wondering, yes 2Pac is still alive. Well, maybe not in flesh and blood, but most definitely his message rings loud and clear today more so than ever before. Changes like we’ve never seen before are now upon us. In this period of personal and global retrospection/introspection, how does this current period of forced, disruptive, isolated change look for you and I?

During this unprecedented time, most of us are experiencing a little more time at home to think about our current local and global situation. For two days this month I was mentally quarantined in a state of conflicted rumination. Believe me, thanks to social media and social interaction, or lack there of, I know hour by hour, day by day, and now week by week the state of where we are as a human species in terms of holistic health. A full spectrum of characteristics and behavior surfaced within my own introspective misunderstanding. My confusion was based more so on, where is my overall health in all of this? When my wife asked me if I was okay, I knew I was healthy physically, however, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually I was feeling helplessness. Now that my pantry was filled and I have enough toilet paper to wipe myself, I wrestled with what’s next?

That’s the challenging thought we are all now faced with. Will my path come across Lady Corona? When can I go back to work? Will our children go back to school? Most importantly, will football be cancelled this year? Finding humor in these times is healthy and maybe difficult, so for those that don’t know me that last concern of mine is only a fraction of actual truth…..

The truth that plagues all of us currently is a greater sense of uncertainty in an already uncertain world. That can be terrifying….Here’s truth I do know; We’ve been given the power and ability to take control over our thoughts and actions regardless of the storm we are experiencing. How?? As Tupac states in his song Changes, let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live, and let's change the way we treat each other. These ways could be literal, or require a more complex introspective exploring. It’s not always that simple. Sadly, wherever Tupac was in his journey of change, it didn’t come soon enough to save him from his senseless murder 24 years ago.

Have we been given this time within our homes to begin a shift of change personally, within our marriage or relationship with our children? How about connecting with family or friends that we’ve lost connection with due to our normally hectic schedules? Identifying where we are spending majority of our time right now could be a good place to start. Is it serving us in a healthy manner, or otherwise? Maybe we need to distance ourselves socially in order to first grow personally, so that we can re-enter society a better version of ourselves. Identifying where change can occur on a deeper level in any area of our life takes daily intentional cognitive awareness. Prayer, meditation, exercise, reading, writing, cooking, walking, crafting, communicating, Zooming (lol), just to name a few.

With my extra time I’ve been able to uncover some areas of my own personal life that needs a change in focus that are leading me to a new clarity, and some most excellent Epic Discoveries. As these discoveries unfold I plan to share and hopefully connect with others in our time of distancing.
